- Act 3: Quest 18 - Find assistance in the Hall of Valor
Prerequisites: Completion of the quest "The World-Eater's Eyrie". Quest Giver: (The Dragonborn's destiny) Region: Sovngarde Reward: (Only the unique privilege of visiting the legendary Hall of Valor)
Summary: On your path through Sovngarde, you witness Alduin growing increasingly powerful. After proving your worthiness to Tsun, you are permitted to enter Shor's Hall of Valor. There, you will find companions for the final battle against Alduin.
Quest Description
Find out how to defeat Alduin
What a mortal perceives of Sovngarde is, at first, a path into the Shadowed Vale. On the horizon, Shor's massive Hall of Valor looms. The path and the vale are surrounded by impassable mountains, while the hall demarcates this tangible world from the infinity lying beyond.
Sovngarde. In the distance, Shor's massive Hall of Valor.
Descending the path, you can already hear the black dragon's roaring from afar. Dense mist drifts through the valley - Alduin's soul snare. He hunts the lost souls trapped in this ghostly vale. He devours those who wander off the path and lose themselves in the fog. Now and then, you encounter such a frightened soul, like a Stormcloak soldier asking for directions to Shor's hall. All these lost individuals speak of the horror lurking within the mist. All courage seems in vain against the danger guarding the path. There is no escape. Bravery is useless. You must be careful - the World-Eater waits in the fog.
The horror lurks in the mist of the Shadowed Vale.
To avoid wandering off the path yourself, you can cast "Clear Skies", causing the fog to dissipate for a short time. The path then splits, but both trails end at a bridge made of whalebone that spans a chasm and leads to Shor's hall.
Gain admittance to the Hall of Valor
In front of the bridge, you are halted by Tsun , the divine Shield-Thane of Shor who was slain by Elves. He asks by what right you demand entry. Depending on your progress and achievements throughout the entire game, you have several dialogue options, but one is always present: the birthright of the Dragonborn. Yet, by Shor's command, no one may cross the bridge until Tsun has deemed them worthy. You must prove your worth to Tsun in combat. His strikes with the two-handed battleaxe are powerful. If you are not well-protected, you should block them or dodge. Once his health drops to half, he halts the battle with respect and grants you admittance.
The bridge made of whalebone to the Hall of Valor.
Speak with the heroes of Sovngarde
Upon entering the Hall of Valor, you are greeted as the Dragonborn by the legendary Ysgramor. He mentions that for a long time, no one has passed through those doors because Alduin set up his soul snare. Understandably, everyone wanted to rush out, but Shor commanded them to sheathe their swords and remain inside. However, three of them have been waiting for the player to fight the enemy.
The glorious Nord heroes assembled in Shor's golden halls.
Before pursuing your destiny as a dragon slayer, you can look around the mythical and venerable hall complex. It is just as described in lore and ancient songs: the fallen Nord heroes feast, eat, drink, and compete in never-ending contests of strength and agility. Here, they sit together in the golden halls and share tales of glorious battles. Time has no meaning here, the mead flows eternally, and there are enough pretty girls for everyone (the last part is not implemented in the game).
If you take a little time, you can encounter other significant historical figures besides Ysgramor, such as:
Jurgen Windcaller - Founder of the Way of the Voice and creator of High Hrothgar.
Olaf One-Eye - King and vanquisher of the dragon Numinex. If you have completed the bard quest "Tending the Flames", he will share his thoughts on the matter and on Svaknir (whom you can encounter outside in the valley).
Ulfgar the Unending - One of the Five Hundred Companions, who spent millennia trying to find his way here.
Erlendr, Nikulas und Hunroor - Betrayed friends of Ulfgar the Unending.
Another Dragonborn can also be found among the revelers.
Finally, the three heroes you already witnessed in the vision at the time-wound are also present: Gormlaith Golden-Hilt, who was slain by Alduin, Felldir the Old, and Hakon One-Eye. As soon as you join them, Gormlaith can hardly contain herself and wants to head out immediately to slaughter Alduin. However, Felldir advises against blindly rushing into battle. He explains that the mist is Alduin's shield and cloak - we must combine our voices, blow away the mist, and force Alduin to fight. Hakon agrees, and Gormlaith is the first to charge ahead. Before you leave the hall, the quest ends at this point. The next one starts automatically.
Tips & Notes
The dialogues with the lost souls in the Shadowed Vale can end abruptly if your conversation partners are snatched away by Alduin.
Alduin magically generates the dense fog using the dragon shout VEN MUL RIIK (Cyclone / Shroud / Mist).
Ulfric, Kodlak, Rikke).
The first quest objective "Find out how to defeat Alduin" has a questionable purpose. It is marked as completed even if you do nothing but walk the path to Tsun. It might just be triggered by witnessing the mist, making the objective's title ill-named.
If you attempt to pass Tsun without permission, you will be struck by lightning of divine power (presumably from Shor) and die within seconds. Even the "Become Ethereal" shout will not save you.
If you jump off the bridge, you die despite using "Become Ethereal". If you slowly climb down the rocks into the chasm, you will still die automatically at a depth of about 30 meters.
Considering that everyone arrived here at the time of their death, some heroes are depicted as far too young – for example, Ysgramor or Jurgen Windcaller.
According to Nord belief, only those who die bravely in honorable combat are permitted entry into Shor's hall (which was precisely the predicament of Ulfgar the Unending). Accordingly, Jurgen Windcaller should not be here at all, as he reportedly died of natural causes.
Shor does not sit on his ancestral throne. Lore suggests that a mortal Dragonborn would go blind from witnessing his divine presence.
No shadows are cast within the entire Hall of Valor (the few exceptions were likely unintentional by the designers).
