Quest Description
Find the location of the Elder Scroll
As soon as you ask Paarthurnax where to find the Elder Scroll, the quest begins. Paarthurnax cannot answer the question and advises you to trust your own instincts. You can converse further with Paarthurnax about the effect of the Dragonrend shout and the rupture of time back then, learning that the dov, as children of Akatosh, are particularly attuned to the flow of time. And at the same time, uniquely vulnerable.
The time-wound - Tiid-Ahraan - was created right here, on the Throat of the World. Therefore, you are to bring the Elder Scroll here to use it to reach the other side of the rupture. Then, you are to experience a vision of Paarthurnax's friends - Hakon, Gormlaith, and Felldir. They were the first mortals Paarthurnax taught the Thu'um - the first Tongues. They were the leaders of the rebellion against Alduin and created the Dragonrend shout. Only from them can you learn it.
In the search for the Elder Scroll, you can first try your luck at the Greybeard monastery.
You can return to the Greybeards and ask them for clues. Master Arngeir is somewhat surprised that Paarthurnax is assisting in the search for Dragonrend, but he bows to his wisdom. The Greybeards have never had anything to do with the Elder Scrolls. However, he notes that the mages of Winterhold occupy themselves with such blasphemies. You should inquire there. Regarding Alduin, Master Arngeir suggests considering that Alduin perhaps should not be defeated at all. If the world is meant to end in order to be reborn, then so be it.
Another option would be to inquire with the Blades. To do this, you must travel to Sky Haven Temple. Delphine will immediately ask if the Greybeards know anything about the shout used against Alduin. When you reply that an Elder Scroll is required, she admits that it will not be easy to procure and refers you to the expert, Esbern.
Esbern engrossed in old books inside Sky Haven Temple.
He also points you toward the College of Winterhold. The mages there are highly interested in arcane knowledge and should be able to provide further clues.
The former glory of Winterhold is long a thing of the past.
To consult the mages, you must first gain access to the College. To do so, you must speak with Faralda, the High Elf guarding the entrance. If this is your first time here, this simultaneously begins the questline for the College of Winterhold, and the first quest★ must at least be started to be allowed entry into the College.
If you only want to focus on the main quest for now, you do not need to finish that first College quest immediately. As soon as Faralda refers you to Mirabelle Ervine, you can head directly into the large library, the Arcanaeum. Sitting there is the grumpy Orc, Urag gro-Shub, whom you can ask for information about Elder Scrolls. Once the topic is made specific, the Daedric quest "Discerning the Transmundane"★ begins. From this point on, it runs parallel to the main quest (the Elder Scroll is a partial objective of the Daedric quest). For details on how to proceed until obtaining the Elder Scroll, see that guide.
Upon removing the Elder Scroll from the Dwemer containment mechanism, this quest ends, and the next one begins simultaneously.
Tips & Notes
Master Arngeir's explanations regarding Dragonrend and the Blades partially contradict the established TES lore.
You do not have to follow the clues to Winterhold. If you happen to find Septimus Signus by chance, you can obtain the scroll without them.
With the scroll in your inventory, you can choose to continue the Daedric quest or complete it at a later time.
If you attempt to read the Elder Scroll, you will become temporarily blinded.
