Quest Description

After everyone in Dragonsreach realized toward the end of the last quest that the player is the Dragonborn and that the Greybeards have summoned him, Jarl Balgruuf sends you to High Hrothgar to be instructed by the monks in the Way of the Voice. The last time such an event occurred was centuries ago, when Talos of Atmora, later Tiber Septim, was summoned in the exact same manner.

Beginning of the Journey to the Greybeards
South of Whiterun, you initially take the road heading east to reach the Greybeards on the high mountain.

Thus, you embark on the long journey to the Throat of the World, the highest mountain in Skyrim. Leaving Whiterun toward the east or south, you can already see your destination in the distance, though a direct path is impossible. A potential route for those in a hurry would be fast-traveling to Helgen and then heading east. Another, more arduous path leads steeply across half of the mountain. However, to see some of the land and its people, it is highly recommended to stay on the paved roads. The danger from wild animals is lower here, and you will not get lost as easily. For safety, you can take Lydia with you; otherwise, she will wait in Dragonsreach.

Talk to the Greybeards
From Pelagia Farm and the Honningbrew Meadery south of Whiterun, take the path heading east, then continue across the bridge at the first intersection, then head northeast and east. To stay on the correct path, you can use the signposts along the roadside for orientation and always head toward Ivarstead. After passing White River Watch, you can opt for the steep, short path over the mountain. Otherwise, continue along the stone path past the Valtheim TowersValtheim Towers, where you will encounter bandits. After the waterfall, the path leads downhill and turns south near Darkshade. Continue along the paved path to the left of Hillgrund's Tomb, across the bridge at the Darkwater River, and past Fort Amol.

Road through Birch Forest
The signposted main road through the autumnal birch forest.

After another two bridges, past Snapleg Cave, head south through a sparse birch forest until you reach Sarethi Farm. Always keep an eye out for signposts toward Ivarstead; pass Honeystrand Cave heading northwest, and after crossing another bridge, you will have reached Ivarstead.

Ivarstead
Gathering strength in the town of Ivarstead.

Ivarstead is a small town in the shadow of the massive mountain, where primarily pilgrims make a stopover on their journey to the remote monastery. Directly behind the settlement begins the winding path with the legendary 7,000 steps up to High Hrothgar. You will encounter pilgrims and dangerous animals, and discover a total of ten small shrines that tell the history of dragons and humans in verse form. The path leads in a loop around the mountain, and you will soon reach the snow line. After an arduous ascent, you will eventually reach the snow- and wind-swept walls of the monastery.

High Hrothgar
High Hrothgar was erected by Jurgen Windcaller as a place of meditation and a sanctuary for the Tongues 4,000 years ago.

Demonstrate your "Unrelenting Force" shout / Talk to Arngeir
Upon entering the structure, you are welcomedWelcome to the Monastery as Dragonborn by the spokesman of the Greybeards present, Master Arngeir. You are requested to demonstrate your vocal capabilities, and after executing the "Unrelenting Force" shout, you are also welcomed to the monastery by the other monks - Einarth, Borri, and Wulfgar. In conversation with Master Arngeir, you can learn more about the Dragonborn, the dragon language, and history.

Learn the Word of Power from Einarth
However, you are here to learn, and Master Einarth teaches the player the second word of Unrelenting Force: RO. After a dragon fight, you would absorb the dragon's knowledge along with its soul. Here, the knowledge is transferred directly from the master.

Demonstrate your "Unrelenting Force" shout (three times)
After learning the understanding and deep meaning of the word, you are required to direct the shout three times at a target as a final test. For this purpose, Greybeard phantomsTest with Greybeard Phantoms are summoned one after another as targets.

Learn the Word of Power from Borri
You are congratulated on the successful completion of the task and asked to follow Master Borri into the courtyard. There, you are taught how to master the shout WULD. You are told to hear the word deep within yourself before channeling it into a Thu'um.

Demonstrate your "Whirlwind Sprint" shout
You must also demonstrate this learning success and, like Master WulfgarMaster Wulfgar, dash through a gate that opens only for a brief moment. To do this, you must equip the "Whirlwind Sprint" shout in the magic menu, and as soon as the gate opens, execute the shout and pass through the gate.

Everyone is thrilled by how quickly you have learned to master the words, and Master ArngeirMaster Arngeir speaks of a divine gift that only a Dragonborn can possess. He explains that you carry the dragon language in your blood and can therefore learn it almost effortlessly. The monks return to their MeditationMeditation, and you are requested to retrieve the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller as the final part of your trial. It is located at Windcaller's resting place in Ustengrav. While you can still ask Master Arngeir further questions, the quest is completed and the next one is activated.

Tips & Notes

  • There is a small Nirnroot plantation at Sarethi Farm. This is connected to Sinderion (from Skingrad), who in turn is tied to the side quest "A Return to Your Roots".
  • At the second bridge in Ivarstead, you can speak to Klimmek, for whom you can deliver a bag of supplies to the Greybeards. Before the monastery entrance, place the bag into the chest located there. Returning to Klimmek later will net you a welcome reward.
  • If you have read all 10 shrine plaques during the ascent of the 7,000 steps, you will receive the blessing Voice of the SkyVoice of the Sky. This is not an advantage if you wish to practice weapon combat in the wilderness.
  • During the demonstration of FUS, loose objects fly across the hall and the monks cover their ears.
  • If you have already learned WULD elsewhere, Master Borri will teach you a different word for "Whirlwind Sprint".
